About Duncan

Whether you are just starting out, or moving into retirement, Duncan has so much to offer. It is known as the “City of Totems” with its collection of 38 totem poles created by First Nations master carvers. Duncan is the economic hub of the Cowichan Valley - a small town, with lots to offer – dining, shopping, art galleries, theatre, sports fields, Cowichan Sportsplex, Cowichan Aquatic Centre, parks, hospital and lots of recreation.

Duncan delivers the quiet of a small town, but also is close enough to the big cities when you need that hustle and bustle only being a 30-45 minute commute to either Nanaimo or Victoria, both of which have airports and ferry access to the mainland.

Duncan provides great learning opportunities with has 1 Secondary, 1 Middle and 6 Elementary schools that offer regular curriculum, Aboriginal education, French Immersion and alternative learning programs. Duncan also has numerous private and independent schools (Queen Margaret’s, Sunrise Waldorf, Duncan Christian and Queen of Angels) and is home to the Cowichan Campus of Vancouver Island University.

In Closing

I love the heritage and vintage buildings that Duncan has to offer. The center of downtown Duncan houses the 1913-built City Hall and every Saturday City Square hosts the famous Duncan Farmer’s Market. I’m never at a loss to find a bistro, brew pub or small local business to support. Volume One Bookstore, Cardino Shoes, Outlooks, and the Old Firehouse Wine and Cocktail bar are some of my favourites. - David Lowes
