About Lake Cowichan

Cowichan Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes on Vancouver Island. It has numerous neighbouring towns that were originally logging towns such as Town of Lake Cowichan, Mesachie Lake, Honeymoon Bay, and Youbou.

Lake Cowichan is located 75 minutes north of Victoria, 60 south of Nanaimo, and 20 minutes west of Duncan, and I must say, it’s a nice scenic drive to unwind!

These towns now focus on recreation-forming the basis of their economy. Lake Cowichan is surrounded by the great outdoors and provides almost endless opportunities to explore – whether at one of the many lakes to swim, fish, kayak, boat; trails and mountains to hike; and private and municipal campgrounds for day visits or camping.

Lake Cowichan is a small town, that grows with the warm season with day-trippers wanting to get a bit of sun while tubing down the Cowichan River, to families that come for their annual camping trip. The recent addition to Lake Cowichan is Laketown Ranch, an outdoor venue to promote live music performances and offer camping.

Lake Cowichan has small friendly schools – an elementary (K-4) and secondary school (4-12).

I like to check out the Kaatza Station Museum to ponder the collection of artifacts from loggings past. I recently discovered that Lakeview Public Beach has a floating walkway and forest trail – something to do on a gorgeous sunny day. - David Lowes
